Lately I've been getting tons off emails & messages from ladies who are thinking of becoming a makeup artist or just starting up so I thought I'd share a couple of tips that helped me start up.
As you probably already know, the beauty industry is constantly growing with new makeup artists coming out everyday. Social media has helped hundreds of makeup artists start their own platform and advertise their work. So tip #1 is get active on social media and keep at it. Persistence is key. The more you post, the more interest you will get.
Tip #2: Start building your kit slowly. Don't just buy random products and waste money. Invest in products you will need and will be using in your kit. When I first started off, I invested in a lot of palettes. They work out cheaper and are also easier to travel with. You don't need to buy tons and tons of makeup straightaway. Build your kit slowly.
Tip #3: Applying makeup on yourself is extremely different to applying makeup on other people. Start by practicing on friends and family before you start taking bookings. Odds are, if you're only used to applying makeup on yourself, you will struggle on your clients. Remember, practice makes perfect.
Tip #4: Create a business card. This is the cheapest form of marketing for a makeup artist or any business.
Tip #5: Don't compare yourself to other makeup artists. There are tons and tons of makeup artists out there. The worst thing you can do is compare yourself to them and put yourself down. Everyone grows at their own speed. Set your own goals & work towards them slowly. You're not in competition with anyone.
I hope this post helps some of you ladies out who are becoming makeup artists. Until next time, Taz x
